Three Simple Principles to Help Your Baby Sleep More Safely

Safe sleep practices are vital for babies’ well-being.

Baby sleeping

Did you know that unsafe sleep is the leading cause of non-natural infant death in Virginia?

Sleep is one of the most important factors of an infant’s well-being. Sadly, healthy babies are dying every day in Virginia because they are being placed to sleep in unsafe places or through unsafe practices by well-meaning caregivers.

Unsafe sleep practices include placing a baby to sleep on soft bedding or pillows, putting stuffed animals in the crib, placing a baby to sleep on their stomach or side, or in bed with parents or other individuals.

In observance of Safe Sleep Awareness Month, the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is sharing tips for safe sleep practices.

The Three A’s: Alone, Apart, Always

According to the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS), we can help minimize the risk of sleep-related infant death by following three simple principles at every nap and bedtime:

  • ALONE – Baby is on his/her back, but within the same room as their caregiver
  • APART – Baby is not near toys, blankets, pillows or other objects
  • ALWAYS – Baby is in a separate, safe sleep space such as a crib or bassinet and in a drug- and alcohol-free environment

Spread the Words

Alone, apart, always – be sure to share the “three A’s” with siblings, grandparents and others who care for your baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reports nearly one in five sleep-related deaths occur while an infant is in the care of someone other than a parent or usual caregiver.
